For 29 years I worked for a company in the capacity of a technical writer supporting customer service offices around the world, including France, Germany, China, Singapore, Australia, the US and Canada. Formal instructions having clear and concise directions are imperative, particularly when many of the reader's "English" is a second language. Many writings contained graphics and photos to be as clear as possible.
Proper grammar and proof reading are personal pet peeves of mine as so many new hires, even straight out of collage, have demonstrated their inability to write a simple email without mis-spelling or poor sentence structure. Anything I ever put in writing is proofed numerous times before submitting via the "send" button.
Throughout my career, confronted with tasks for which at times were outside my skill set, it was not uncommon for me to perform my own crash course of researching, or seek input from those knowledgeable in the field.
